----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Share Your History with a local Grade 3 Student: On Tuesday, September 28 at 2:00 PM the grade 3 class from Prospect Lake Elementary School would like to come to the hall to interview local seniors as part of their program on local history. Share your observations and experiences with a young person. To indicate your interest please call Barbara Newton at 250-479-8061 or secretary@pldca.ca
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Memory Plus Program: This enjoyable program is for people who are experiencing some memory difficulties. This program provides a safe place to explore some of these difficulties, and learn some strategies to assist you in getting what you want and enjoy from life. There will be an information session on Wednesday, September 15 from 1 to 3 PM at the hall. This program can accommodate 6 to 8 people. If you are interested you can contact Barbara Newton at 250-479-8061 or secretary@pldca.caor just drop in on the day.
Building Bridges: 55+ Programming
We are delighted that the PLDCA was selected for a Government of Canada New Horizons Grant to initiate programming in 2010 for the over 55 population in this community. A full 50% of the funds were earmarked in the original application for capital purchases, many of which have already been purchased or are on order.
The title of this program initiative is Building Bridges , a term that describes the many connections that can be fostered through these activities : bridges between individuals in the community, bridges between generations, bridges between a person and their own history, bridges between all of us and our history as a community, bridges between individuals and other resources or information.
The core of the Building Bridges Program will be a Tuesday Afternoon Drop-In Speaker Session running from 1-3 PM from April 6 until we take a break in November. Our partner in this is Sue McCauley of Saanich Silver Threads who will facilitate and arrange a roster of speakers for these sessions. However, interesting as the speakers may be, these Tuesday afternoons are an occasion for people to visit with neighbours, see old friends and make new ones over coffee and snacks.
A demand for Other Recreational Activities may come out of these Tuesday afternoon sessions. For example it is possible that a group would like to play bridge, a group may like an age appropriate exercise program, a few people may like to form a horticultural group, a group may enjoy more active games; we won’t know until the participants indicate their interests and community members step forward to make it happen.
Plans exist to offer Memory P.L.U.S. in the fall – a program for those experiencing memory difficulties. Though the program is designed to be safe and fun, it is a clinical program targeting a specific group who will most benefit.
Plans also exist to initiate an Archive Project to collect, assemble and display photos and other memorabilia of the history of our community, our association and our hall. Over the years the topic of this project has come up again and again; we can expect lots of interest from the community for an archive project of this kind.
Plans also exist to develop a plan for neighbours to support neighbours through a Phoning Tree or other neighbourly support. Whenever this plan is mentioned there is agreement that this would be very useful.
This is an ambitious and exciting plan for 2010 – a plan that will be the beginning of ongoing programming for mature adults in our community made possible by the energy, imagination and interest of their neighbours.
